Hedge with Bench, Montacute House, Somerset, England

Featured in the 2000 Architecture Engagement Calendar (week of August 21)

A classic English garden scene with a teak bench in front of the "wobbly" hedges at Montacute House dating from the 16th Century. The shape of the yew hedges is a result of a heavy snow storm during the winter of 1947.  Parts of the plants died, were cut away, and have been maintained in this unique shape since then.  They were used as a backdrop for a scene in the 1995 movie "Sense and Sensibility".

Taken 27 August 1997.
